Hey all, Plain and simply, if money was not an issue for you, what would be your top three choices for an extended vacation right at this very moment? Any particular reasons why?
I figure Munich would be on that list since it's very cool place and feels less like a city of 1 million and more like a village with a population in excess of 1 million.
Space would also be on the list as money is not an issue.
For the third destination I'd probably want to visit China or Mongolia. No particular reason why.
More realistically, I'd like to spend a month or two in northern France, maybe Alsace. And I'd love to return to Laos and Cambodia to explore more-- they were both amazingly welcoming and affordable and I didn't budget enough time the last time...
I can't wait to see what other folks come up with!
I'd spend months driving around Australia. I spent two weeks there and barely scratched the surface of a small part of it. Italy, I think, because I never seem to get there. And I'd love to go to Japan. I think I could find places to replace Italy and Japan (New Zealand, Nauru,...), but Australia's the tops.
I'm kind of right there with you, JonBoy. I've been wanting to go back to Italy, I want to go to Thailand and I'm going to Greece in a couple weeks! :)
However, if money and time were no object, then the three places I would go are:
NYC
Paris
Sydney
...all because I would want to buy a flat in each of those areas so I could fly in my private jet whenever I wanted and enjoy my favorite places! Key differentiator here is...time and money were no object! I obviously don't have that much money...nor time! ;)
Good question, as there are a million places I'd love to visit. I am quite fortunate to have fulfilled some of my top desires. I went to Buenos Aries for New Year's in '05, Greece (primarily Santorini) for a summer trip in '06 and am finally off to Italy this October !!
Would love to hear when you all visit your favorite/top destinations.
I'm particularly fond of archaeologically important sites, so places like Egypt, Pompeii, and Petra, among others, have always been on my dream list; I've yet to visit any of them.
Right now, however, I'd have to say that my top ones would be Iceland and Tunisia. I've read quite a bit on Iceland and everything there, from the culture to the landscape, utterly fascinates me. Tunisia is similar, just because it's been influenced by so many different cultures (French, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, etc) over the centuries. Hopefully I'll be on my way to one of these two before the end of this year.
Hmmm ... missed this when it first came up, and it's an interesting enough question to stand revival ...
For me money is not so much the issue (although it's not trivial, to be sure) as logistics is. There are a number of places that might appear on my list if I was convinced I could do them reasonably safely, but I'm not, and the safety cannot always be bought simply by throwing money at the problem. An example: I'd love to see the really remote parts of the Aleutian Islands (e.g. the Islands of Four Mountains section), but no amount of money is going to mitigate the dangerously vile weather, lengthy voyage across treacherous seas, lack of a safe landing point, etc.
That said, after considerable reflection (Andrew is right, this is harder than it looks), my choices are:
1. A good solid month wandering Australia.
2. Another good solid month in Iceland, particularly including expeditions to the interior.
3. The amazing African volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, and other stuff along the African Rift Valley along the way. Only if logistics were well in hand, though. If not, then replace this one with Alaska.
My priorities are to avoid cities, get into beautiful and exotic places, avoid cities, be active, avoid cities, see something really new and different, and oh yes, avoid cities. I've had the good fortune in my life to do a lot of trips that meet these goals, so a number of things that I'd recommend to others with similar priorities (e.g. Hawaii except Oahu, Costa Rica) don't appear here simply because I've been there.

Harder than I thought
This is harder than I thought it'd be.

This is hard...
With money out of the way, I have to agree with Sapphire and say Space.
If travel time wasn't an issue, then Buenos Aires and the rest of South America.
More realistically, I'd like to spend a month or two in northern France, maybe Alsace. And I'd love to return to Laos and Cambodia to explore more-- they were both amazingly welcoming and affordable and I didn't budget enough time the last time...
