Here's a challenge I need help with --- I have $700 credit with Orbitz for an American Airlines flight that must be expended before August 2008. I would like to go as far as possible to a destination that is not a high dollar place. I am single, 48, male, like the outdoors, hiking, cycling and am generally open to non-sedentary adventure. Also enjoy museums, sightseeing. I've already been to Mexico, Canada, Greece, Turkey, Hawaii. I would prefer somewhere that I have not been before in the U.S. or abroad. But with $700 in airfare how far can you go! I'm open to any destination I can get to for about $700 in airfare with American Airlines. My starting point is Salt lake City.
Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Decide where to go first, then see how much it costs
Airfares vary so drastically depending on timing and routing that I'd suggest you first figure out a few places you'd like to go, and then start working on the prices. Here's a handy list of all AA destinations:

Alaska? Central or South America? The Caribbean? AA has good coverage of Europe, but it's not exactly a "high-dollar" destination right now.
WHERE TO SPEND THE $700 IN CREDIT?
Where in the world is Matt Laurer was in Argentia recently and said the american dollar was worth alot for your money there. Try South America

First figure out where you'd like to go, then make the trip "fit." This said, the need to spend your credit by August is a fairly serious constraint that makes it hard to see places in Central America and the Caribbean under favorable conditions. A few years ago my wife and I won(!) a trip to St. Lucia in mid-summer, and while it was an interesting place, my main memory of it is simply one of non-stop perspiration. I wouldn't go that way. Most of American's other destinations in the region will suffer from similar climatic disadvantages, and that's without considering hurricanes...
How about Ireland? Can you augment the credit by enough to get there? If so, it's gorgeous country, well suited for cycling and comparatively economical by European standards. That might be my own preference under the conditions, since American no longer flies into Scotland -- my preferred summer vacation site under ANY conditions.
