If you had to choose, which one would you go to and why?
(I have to choose for next summer)

Uhh...
...for starters, do you like your vacations hot or cold?

Alaska!
I choose Alaska. You know, if you go to Croatia, all you will see are cathedrals, run-down buildings, and some interesting attractions and landmarks. Unless, you're lucky enough to get away from the large cities, or if you speak Croatian and manage to organize excursions.
Alaska, though, at least I imagine, would be awesome because it's more rugged and if you'd like to escape urban sprawl, then where's a better place? Plus, I want to go to Denali National Park.

Actually...
...Croatia is best known for its lengthy and gorgeous Adriatic coastline full of gems like Dubrovnik. Run-down buildings and cathedrals are more a Serbian/Bosnian speciality.

Not as different as you might think...
I'd choose Alaska in a flash given the opportunity, but Andrew, if my in-laws' experience is anything like typical, one important aspect of a trip there is more similar to a trip to Croatia than meets the eye. The similarity is that getting off the beaten path ain't easy and is logistically taxing, albeit for different reasons than in Croatia, while what's "on the beaten path" there will be shared with a fair number of people. Because the beaten path leads to such fabulous and exotic places (e.g. Denali), might as well follow it, at least the first time you're there. But don't expect the get-away-from-it-all part of the experience to be as novel as you might think, unless you're willing to go to considerable effort to make it so (in which case you really can "get away from it all" like almost nowhere else in the world).

Touché
An excellent point, however, I was basing my opinion on the fact that the original poster wrote the question in English, and assumed, though that may have been foolish to do so, that he/she, like myself, cannot speak Croatian. Thus, in that sense, arranging to get off the beaten is easier because of a lack of a language barrier, or at least the language barrier shouldn't be as hard to overcome.
Personally, I'd like to do Denali, but my real dream would be to take a tent, one of those super-thermal sleeping bags, sticks, matches and go camping for a week in the middle of nowhere. Then, have a plane pick me up at the end of the week. Of course, I'd bring a GPS and sat phone, just to make sure no one forgets about me.
