Travelers Cafe and more...

Please have a look into http://crossroads.world66.com/forum/crossroads_technical_issues/bug_reports/pending/134, the three last postings... definitely, a real pleasure to read/think about/post...in short: exchange !We might wish to have a Travelers Cafe, Pub, Bar, Saloon or something....

This put a possible idea to change a bit the Crossroads Community structure (as shown in http://crossroads.world66.com/forum)

* Take away the section [Worldwide] from the Forum pages (Accommodations, Restaurants, Transportation, Boats, Planes, Trains, Traveling with Children, Pets, Special needs).

* Create a new main entry in Crossroads Community, use a metaphor to entitle: [Travel Plaza] or [Travelers Plaza], even something with [Exchange] could perhaps do IHMO.

* In [*Travelers Plaza] make (metaphor) sub sections (to host new and former [Worldwide] info)

  • - Broker's office (for Accommodations etc. as foreseen)
  • - Restaurants (for Restaurants as foreseen)
  • - Travel Agency (for Transportations (all kinds), Boats, Planes, Trains, Traveling with Children, Pets, Special needs, as foreseen)
  • - Travelers Cafe (to discuss everything else interesting, travel related... music. literature, languages, science... e.g.
    • - Mozart was born here in Salzburg, Austria,
    • - Manchester is mentioned in Ionesco's The bald soprano,
    • - How a gifted Amsterdam football player "recreates" the national language,
    • - etc
  • - Tourist Office (Integrate a search engine (button) to help find information from all categories in the Travellers Plaza section).

.... more....Please, get the idea, not the details!

Response

Reen,

I'm sorry for the delay in replying to your suggestions. We've been working hard to be as responsive as possible to comments and feature requests while continuing to work on larger developments.

These are some interesting ideas, but I'd like to hear some consensus from the community before we do any reorganizing. (The admin's opinion isn't any more valid than any one else's on issues like this.)

Personally I think an 'off/any topic' chat area is a great idea. I'm not sure about having overly creative labels for other travel topics though, they may not always be clear especially to non-native English speakers. It would be too bad if users misunderstood "Travel Agency" or "Broker's office" as being commercial /ad areas.

Could you expand on the 'search' function you mentioned?

... been working hard to be as responsive as possible

of course, everyone knows, and "continuing to work on larger developments" must be given kind of priority to make good progress, no doubt and no problem with me... we all have an interest in that! On the other hand, because I'm not originally from the Wikitravel stable, it's not always easy to find my way in the Wt "heritage" ;-)... that's why (perhaps slightly tailored) feedback is important for me at this stage of development... must get the feeling of possible Wt consensus, must find the right horse to ride ;-)

Experiments with Site tools [Search] option a couple of days ago, refused sometimes to display stuff that should have been found, so I wondered how the function was implemented in the system. Can't reproduce the "missing" issues anymore, however. Perhaps, by coincidence :-), checks were done during system maintenance? Anyway, currently [Search] seems to work perfectly well, although, try out to search for the recent input "Chat Lounge" and you will see only (a) reference(s) to posting(s), not to http://crossroads.world66.com/forums/crossroads_community/chat_lounge (probably because it's an empty page actually?). To check this, could you please make a copy of the three last postings from http://crossroads.world66.com/forum/crossroads_technical_issues/bug_repo..., into http://crossroads.world66.com/forums/crossroads_community/chat_lounge ? Probably, everything will work as expected.

Headers

I don't like getting overly creative with headers either. I'm a native English speaker and sometimes I don't know what to make of a header.

Chat lounge

I went ahead and added a "Chat Lounge" -- though I'd still like to hear other suggestions!
