Things to do in Barcelona

I'm heading out to Barcelona at the end of August, and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for things to do/see there beyond the usual touristy stuff that's there! I know all about the Sagrada Famillia, and although I do plan to visit, I'd love to see/do some things that aren't quite so well known! Also, please tell me any quirky bars/hotels/restaurants you've been to and would recommend! I'm doing this on a pretty tight budget, so if the suggestions were for cheap (or free!) places that's a bonus!

Don't get me started!

Ok, wait, do get me started... Barcelona is super-fun-- where to start!

For "quirky" bars you have to check out the wax museum bar off the bottom of Les Rambles. It's got several different rooms- one fairy grotto where you sit on toad stools in a dimly-lit wax forest full of tiny wax creatures, another made up as an up-side- down doll house complete with furniture and people on the ceiling...

For a great, cheap, meal, it's hard to beat buying picnic fixings at Boqueria Food Market in (Raval and then heading up to Park Guell or down to the waterfront to eat.

The cheapest thing to do is, of course, walk around and look at buildings. You can pay to go into some of them, but you might be better off just wandering around taking it all in. There's lots of "architectural walks" ... don't bother with a guide or bus.

For places to sleep, the Kabul hostel is right-smack in the middle of things in Plazza Rial (my favorite spot for a cheap beer and tapas too...)

I know other folks will have suggestions of stuff outside Ciutat Vella, but if it's your first trip, don't miss it!

I'm sure I'll think of more... be sure to post a trip report and photos when you get back. I want to hear all about it!

Barcelona blog

As it happens, I just posted a blog entry on my first visit to Barcelona, which might give you a few ideas:

For cheap food, find a local restaurant without an English menu or like Maj says self-cater at the markets: at either, you can get a whole meal for the price of a plate of tapas on la Rambla.

Please please please visit my favorite restaurant in the world!

We just went to Barcelona this spring and stumbled upon Origens 99.9% located at Passeig del Born, n 4, 08003 - Barcelona, TELF. 932 956 690 They feature local specialties of a region within a region of Catalonia. When we were there, we asked the bartender if he had any local specialty liquors, and he just kept pouring, because there were so many to choose from. In the US, you're lucky if you have one.

Go to the gothic district, it's got neat architecture.

See the "most unique you will ever see in your life" designed by the "most universal genius of all time" according to the audioguide at Casa Batlló, one of Gaudi's creations. Also, don't miss Parc Guell.

Enjoy!

Barcelona is cool but...

...if you happen to have a couple of days "off" Barcelona, I strongly recommend you to visit the gorgeous COSTA BRAVA. There's a spot only 1hour away from BCN, called S'Agaro (John Wayne, F.Sinatra & Ava Gardner spent time there). Coast is so beautiful that it almost hurts...You will want 2 spend more time there... For cheap accommodation I recommend Camping Sant Pol (www.campingsantpol.com) they have cool wooden bungalows to rent, too.

audio tour of spain for my ipod

I just did Europe and loaded my iPod with audio tours and enjoyed seeing the sights at my own pace. I did the Barcelona Ramble Down The Rambla tour and recommend it for a bit of fun and adventure. http://www.lodingo.com/_Catalogue/Barcelona%20MP3%20Audio%20Tours
