Places have different names in different languages, but Extra isn't smart enough to grok this yet -- for example, a search for "Chiba" won't find articles tagged "千葉". Any way to get this working without having Maj's head explode?

Too late...
My head is already exploded from this. There will be support for multilingual taxonomies when we roll out the multilingual ui. I invited people to start posting in other languages so we can see how people will want to do that and design around it. For example, some people want to post the same content in more than one language (ie Portuguese and English), which I wasn't expecting.
I've got a lot of ideas of how to deal with the broader issues of synonyms (ie Big Apple, New York City, NYC), but it's going to be a big effort.
Community-tagging (ie you can tag other people's posts) should be back up next week, which will help some. I'm happy to put out my broader development plan for comments if folks don't mind me taking the time to do it.
Thanks

Parents, Related terms and Synonyms
I didn't notice till yesterday that there was a janitorial tools box on my screen. Did you give me the tools? If so, I want to read the help page below, but it shows me a message "Access denied - You are not authorized to access this page.".

Now, I'm interested in the Categories; how Parents, Related terms and Synonyms work. Can I use them to combine multiple names for places and to apply geographical hierarchy? If possible, I also want to use them to combine tags in multiple languages and to classify.
