European road trip suggestions?
I'm thinking of doing a road trip from UK down through France to either Spain or Italy this summer... has anyone got any suggestions for places to go through or cheap things to do or general road trip advice?
Antigua suggestions
I'm probably heading out to the Caribbean this summer to Antigua for a week or so - any recommendations for things to do on the island or places to visit?
RTW2007: Phoenix to Las Vegas, the long way
The following week was one of those classic all-American road trips. It was my first visit to the American Southwest, and the saguaro cact, rounded rocks, parched desert and Wild West kitsch in the Old Town of Phoenix fit my preconceptions of Arizona, but as we headed north on the I-17 the cacti disappeared and were replaced by a stunning array of entirely different landscapes.
Has anyone caught the BBC's Planet Earth series?
I just happened to find out about it a few weeks ago and pre-ordered the DVD set before it came out here in the US on April 24th. I've been watching it ever since I received it, and it is the single most amazing and beautiful nature series I have ever seen. And while it does profile many regions that are not "reachable destinations" in any conventional sense, it certainly did lengthen my list of places to see. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves learning about new places.
Things to do in Turku
Any suggestions for things to do in Turku, Finland? I'll probably hit the castle, but other than that...
I'll be staying in the city center and walking places.
Around the island in 8 days
We've had some pretty intense driving around rural Puerto Rico in the last two days. Tuesday morning we hit the road westward from Ponce to San Germán, a small inland colonial-era city known for its architecture. It was a nice place to stop -- we took some good pictures and walked around the towns two plazas. But the unbearable Puerto Rican tendency towards traffic jams made the visit barely worth the trouble. We were glad when we got on the road again, south towards Parguera.
Earthquakes, Gamblers, Pirates and Oysters: Around the World in 60 Days
It all started with an excuse. I "needed" to visit a conference of marginal utility (but serious potential for fun) in Puerto Rico, which would be located 11913 miles away from Singapore if there was a non-stop flight, which there of course isn't.
If it's Tuesday, this must be Ponce
I'm in the extremely pleasant balcony hallway of the awesome Hotel Melia in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Everyone's getting ready to go for a trip to the west of the island, so I thought I'd take a few moments to blog about the last few days.
RTW2007: Noto/Wakura
After two days of Kanazawa, I took the Noto line local clunker up into Nanao, the end of the JR line. You can always tell you're in the Japanese countryside when little "Jesus loves you" signs start appearing on houses, local banks adopt vegetables as their logos (for example, Notoshu Bank's is a carrot) and the biggest building around is the local JA, a mysterious institution whose primary function seems to be converting taxpayer dollars into the world's most expensive rice.
RTW2007: Kanazawa
I really like Kanazawa. Much of it is modern and funky: you've got brand-new buildings, hordes of university students dressed up in the latest Shibuya-kei fashions, fancy shopping malls tucked full of Louis Vuitton and Gucci. But the station sets the tone: it's a concoction of glass and steel, but the entrance is built as an ancient Japanese wooden temple gate.
