Shanghai is neither off the beaten path nor cheap. Well, the taxi rides are exceptionally cheap, and like most places, it's possible to do it cheaply. But having been to Shanghai (and nowhere else in China), I would recommend spending at most a couple of days there before heading to some place...well, more off the beaten path.
