It seems that it doesn't recover well from the whole-log-in-in-another-window trick that Mediawiki doesn't usually mind. You need to cut&paste your stuff into a new window (ie one you opened after you logged in).
Drupal 6, due at the end of the summer, does an overhaul of the session management that should make it kinder...
