The essence of bad driving

Haven't updated this in ages, largely because I've been a stay-at-home lately, so until I resume traveling, a question for the readers assembled: what, to you, is the quintessence of bad driving, and where do you find it?

Of fuzzballs and the evils of encroaching civilization

I'm not doing much traveling right now, but that's okay, because we're in one of those few-times-a-century periods when to see something remarkable, all you have to do is get outside and look up. Well, that and get away from city lights, of which more later.

Why I love living in New Mexico

I've long counted it a privilege to live in North Central New Mexico, about 20 miles as the crow flies from Santa Fe. That's about the perfect distance: far enough that we put our kids through the vastly superior public schools of Los Alamos rather than the disgraceful mess that is the Santa Fe school system, yet close enough to enjoy the city's fine dining, tremendous arts and music scenes, and generally delightful, artistic wackiness. Particularly the wackiness. For example:

Okay, so how about #756?

My own answer to this Barry Bonds trivia question isn't particularly exciting: when he hit his record breaker, I was in my beat-up little house in New Mexico, trying to get a busted wireless connection to work. (Bless my wife and son, they eventually succeeded where I failed.) All very routine, and in contrast to #755, I didn't even know about it in close to real time, courtesy of the bad connection. However, it's probably just as well, because as will become clear, I don't like Barry Bonds.

So where were you when Bonds hit #755?

Every generation has its defining events, such that members of that generation can remember with stark clarity where they were and what they were doing when the event happened. Pearl Harbor ... the JFK assassination ... first man on the moon ... John Lennon's murder ... when the Berlin Wall came down ... 9/11/01 ... that kind of thing. For baseball fans, seeing Hank Aaron's hallowed home-run record reached by Barry Bonds must be such a moment, if not really a globally significant one. So where was I when Bonds got his 755th?
