RTW2007: Ottawa to Montreal

My week in Ottawa and Montreal passed in the usual hurly-burly of business meetings and family reunions, but one excursion is worth a mention: a trip to the village of Carp, pronounced ''Kearp'', home to the Central Emergency Government Headquarters, better known as the Diefenbunker. Built during the height of Cold War paranoia, this super-reinforced four-story underground bunker is where Canada's government would have huddled had Armageddon arrived.

Earthquakes, Gamblers, Pirates and Oysters: Around the World in 60 Days

It all started with an excuse. I "needed" to visit a conference of marginal utility (but serious potential for fun) in Puerto Rico, which would be located 11913 miles away from Singapore if there was a non-stop flight, which there of course isn't.

Winter's finally here...

It's -30C with wind chill and I'm ready to flee to the south! We're off to SxSw in Austin about 3 weeks from now. Just in time to miss the thaw that sends 6 months of preserved dog pee into the streets along with literal tons of exhaust-blackened, salty, gravely melted snow.

O'Hare

We got back to Montreal yesterday morning just after midnight. Maj got us upgrades on United to business class, which was really a life-saver. There's a direct flight from San Francisco to Montreal, but it's 5 hours one way and 6 hours on another. This time traveling to California, we decided to split up the flight, stopping in Chicago about halfway between.

Around the flagpole

My work permit in Canada expired on December 1, so I needed to renew it. It's possible to renew these things by mail, which is worrisome and time-consuming, or even to go into an office in Montreal (near-mythical, crowded, reportedly ineffective).

California Dreamin'

All the leaves are brown, red, orange, chartreuse and saffron here in Montreal, yet we're off to wt:San Francisco tomorrow morning (early) to visit friends and family. I love going to see my parents and brothers and sister-in-law and nieces, but I also like going back to see the Bay Area (California).

To Hudson and Back Again

Maj, Amita June and I went down to Hudson (New York) over the weekend for the wedding reception of our friends Morgan and Kate. The trip down was fantastic -- the colors in the Adirondacks were really amazing, just hitting their peak. Amita June had a good drive, too: she got to look around a lot, listened to some music, and had a nap of about an hour and a half.

Run for the border

This morning we're off to upstate New York (state) for two nights. It's supposed to be a super-nice weekend: sunny and warm(ish). I'm looking forward to some "leaf peeping," though the peeping is pretty great right out my window in the parc.
