The Chinese government has tighten visa restrictions extremely so leading up to the Beijing Olympics. Under the new regulations, all travellers must now show: 1) proof of a pre-booked accommodation and 2) a return flight ticket. These rules are being strictly enforced. It seems all Chinese embassies and consulates have been ordered to enforce these new regulations, even in Hong Kong obtaining a Chinese visa has become very difficult. Not since the early 1980's have the Chinese had such strict entry regulations.
