Q&A: Bali
This is the first in an on-going series of travel questions-and-answers based on emails I get. Feel free to comment, correct, and disagree with my answers!
I am planning to travel to Bali in December for 2 weeks during the Christmas holiday and could use some practical information from you. I am a teacher who is in her 50s (age) and will be traveling alone for a couple of weeks. I plan to stay in UBUD.
Is it safe for me to travel alone and, what advise would you give to me.
My first suggestion would be to check out the Bali & Ubud guides on Wikitravel. Ubud is a very nice place to stay with dozens of art galleries, cultural shows, and excellent restaurants. I would suggest hiring a driver for a tour of the area around Ubud including temples and waterfalls. You can also join a tour group as a nice way to meet people on your trip.
Ubud is a very safe town. Though you may find the 'bar crowd' a little young, it is a very quiet and calm town, even on New Year's Eve (I was there 2 years ago and found it almost too quite!).
If you're interested in being on the beach, I would recommend Sanur instead of Kuta. Bon Voyage!

Thumbs up
Excellent advice. Ubud's nightlife really is quiet, as local rules state that all live performances must end by 10:30 PM (!), so there's very little in the way of discos and such. I warmly recommend the Jazz Cafe though: the live band is surprisingly good, the cocktails strong and the crowd quite eclectic.
